RT DeLorm Scholarships

Richard T. “Dick” DeLorm served as an officer, Board member and Executive Director of the Nebraska Chapter ACI from day one of our chapter’s inception in 1987, until his retirement in 2016. As a retired faculty of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, DeLorm was an active teacher, mentor and advocate for concrete in the state of Nebraska.

DeLorm also oversaw the scholarship process for the Nebraska Chapter ACI for many years. For these reasons, we believe Dick to be extremely deserving of having his name associated with two Nebraska-chapter scholarships that are awarded each year. One undergraduate-level scholarship and one graduate-level scholarship, each in the amount of $1,500 available.

More About Dr. DeLorm

Dr. Delorm was born and raised in Rochester, NY where he soon joined the Air Force at 18 years of age, and actually received his GED in Japan, 2 1/2 years later.  After the Air Force he moved to Lincoln, Nebraska.  He enrolled at the University of Nebraska and soon received a B.A. in Civil Engineering in 1960.

The next four years after graduation, he was employed by the Nebraska Department of Roads working in the Bridge Department.  It didn’t take long before the University reached out to Richard to return to the University to teach engineering courses.  Dr. DeLorm not only accepted but also took the opportunity to take additional classes, resulting in a PhD in 1975.  It must also be noted, Dr. DeLorm taught the concrete materials course for 15 consecutive years.

Dr. DeLorm soon realized there was no presence of the American Concrete Institute in Nebraska.  Nebraska received a charter from ACI International in 1987, and became a official chapter in 1988. Dick was actually the first and second president of the Nebraska Chapter in 1988 and 1989.  With the assistance of Tom Eversden, Norm Nelson, and Ray Ayars (all past Tom Reading Award Recipients) they formed a membership committee resulting in what is now, over 250 individual members within the Nebraska Chapter ACI.

Dr. DeLorm is also a past recipient of the Tom Reading Award in 1999 for his significance and impact on the concrete industry, as well as, his leadership and participation with professional organizations.  Since his official retirement in 2000, he still spends his time on the residence council for the Eastmont Towers and is also an active Board member there.  Most importantly, he has volunteered his time and filled the role of Executive Secretary for our Nebraska Chapter since 1990.

To honor Dr. DeLorm’s contributions, the Nebraska Chapter Board of Directors and its Officers, we would like to name our own ACI Nebraska Scholarship after Dr. DeLorm.  The scholarships awarded will now be named the Richard T. DeLorm Scholarship.
